Who is Alan Watts ?
Alan Watts, the philosopher whose writings influenced the beat and hippie generations and helped popularize Zen Buddhism in the United States, died today at the age of 58. A family physician said Mr. Watts had been under treatment for a heart ailment and died of natural causes in his sleep early in the morning at his Mill Valley home near San Francisco. He also maintained a houseboat residence in nearby Sausalito, where he lived for many years. Mr. Watts was said by friends to have been tired after a recent European lecture trip. He had been scheduled to give a lecture in Palo Alto tomorrow. The family said the body would be cremated and services would be private, but that there would be a memorial observance later.
